Margaret L. Betts, M.D. is the President and Medical Director of  the Betts Medical Group which specializes in internal and adolescent medicine in the city of Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Betts has been actively practicing medicine for more than 20 years and has made it her personal mission to provide quality holistic medical care in order to improve the physical and emotional well being of those in need and to provide education to ensure sustainability.

Dr. Betts attended Wayne State University and received her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. She served her internship and residency at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan and for 10 years acted as Chair of the Infectious Control Committee for the Detroit Psychiatric Hospital. In addition to operating a thriving private practice Dr. Betts also serves as the Medical Director for the city of Detroit School Based Adolescent Health Centers and Teen Clinics.


As a  physician Dr. Betts has dedicated herself to improving the community by not only increasing awareness on health issues but by improving the quality of education available in the city of Detroit.


In furtherance of this goal she ran for a seat on the Board of Education in 1992 and with overwhelming community support she was elected 2 more times and served for eight years.  While serving on the Board of Education she chaired the Health, Safety, and Welfare Committee , which was established on her request, and the Adult Education Committee. She also served as Vice-Chair of  the Communications Committee and Vice President of the Board of Education.

Dr. Betts has a rich and varied background in community, educational and medical activities. She actively participates in the Golightly School Community and on such committees as latch key, teacher selection and curriculum and Vice President of the parent group where her children attended. She also served on the board of the Detroit Public Schools Student Motivational Programs and she is the President of Communities in Schools Executive Board, an organization providing needed afterschool services to public school students.

At Hartford Memorial Baptist Church Dr. Betts functions on the Board of Trustees and Chairs the Youth Council. She is a member of the Michigan State Medical Society, the Detroit Institute of Arts Founders Society, and is a NAACP (Life Member). In addition to being a community activist, she is a savvy business woman who holds the distinction of having been the President and C.O.O. of Corporate Detroit, which may well be the first business magazine of its type owned by an African-American female.

Dr. Betts attended Detroit Public Schools including Longfellow where she started Betts’ Scholars, a scholarship fund that rewards students who achieve at least a 10 percent improvement in academic courses. To honor her parents, who helped her believe that she could succeed even though she became a mother at the age of 15, she began the Betts Foundation in order to help underprivileged children in the City of Detroit to obtain a quality education.

A strong supporter of higher education she has passed this belief on to her children. She has one daughter who has a Ph.D. in Education and two sons who are currently pursuing Bachelor Degrees.
